Another "Dark Crystal" Update!

The other day I shared some news about the upcoming film Power of the Dark Crystal (the much anticipated sequel to The Jim Henson Company’s 1982 classic fantasy film). Since that news post, the good people at the Jim Henson Company have sent me some more information on the upcoming film...and a picture!

The movie will be set hundreds of years after the first film, at a time when the world has once again fallen into darkness. The sequel will follow the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.

The film will start filming later this summer and will be released in early 2008. However, the sequel is only one of several projects the Jim Henson Company is working on to re-explore the world of The Dark Crystal. Other projects include an animated television series (set for a 2008 release on Cartoon Network), a manga series (set for a late-2006 release by TokyoPop) and whole bunch of licensed products such as books, apparel and collectibles.

Below is a little teaser for all the fans out there. This is an official production image from the Jim Henson Company of Queen Kira as seen in Power of the Dark Crystal by Brian Froud. Enjoy!

I´m astonished with this picture. I think is a Froud´s picture, is not a Kira´s "photo".

I´m impatient waiting for Jen new "old" look!!!

We are anxiously awaiting more news on this sequel. I am glad Brian Froud (the original Dark Crystal art conceptualizer) has signed on for this project, and that puppetry and animatronics will be used more so than CGI. There is great potential here. Has anyone seen the really great "Aughra" and "The General" Busts that just were released by PlanBToys? Cool! Does anyone know if it is true that there is a lifesized Mystic on display the the Children's Museum in Pittsburgh PA?

yes that is true. I remember visiting when i was really little and there was a mystic on display and I was the only person who knew what it was from. I went to the childrens museum again a few years back and it was still there!

I can confirm that the Mystic is still there as of today. I took my son on a field trip today and was amazed at the site of it! It was like finding an old friend once lost. Or an ancient treasure, your choice.

I wonder if Lucasarts will be working on it as well. I am very excited about this picture as well. I was 12 in 1982 and loved the movie. I think I am going to watch my old VCR version for good time sakes...

No, just like with the original, LucasArts will not be a part of this movie.
