The Muppets Set to Deliver "Letters to Santa" this Christmas!

Muppet Studios is currently in production on an all new television special filled with songs, mayhem and heaps of holiday high spirits. Entitled "Letters to Santa: A Muppets Christmas", this one-hour television project is set to air this holiday season! Production is well underway and "Letters to Santa" is scheduled to air on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 8:00PM on NBC (check local listings for details).

When the Muppets inadvertently prevent three children's letters from making their way to Santa Claus, Kermit and the gang set off to make things right before Christmas comes. The Muppet are forced to give up their plans of escaping a snow-filled New York City, but needless to say, nothing (not even Miss Piggy's planned trip to the tropics) will stand between the Muppets and a happy Christmas for all.

Directed by Muppet veteran Kirk Thatcher, the special was written by Hugh Fink, Scott Ganz, Andrew Samson and Paul Williams. This musical special will also feature four all-new songs by Paul Williams (songwriter on "Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas", "The Muppet Movie", and "The Muppet Christmas Carol"), and will also include appearances by Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Griffiths, Tony Sirico, Steve Schirripa, Mike Bloomberg, and Madison Pettis.

"Letters to Santa" is sure to bring a heartfelt message about the true meaning of the holiday season and will undoubtedly become an instant holiday classic. So mark your calendars and prepare for an all-new holiday extravaganza staring the one and only Muppets! I will be sure to keep you updated as soon as more information on this very exciting project becomes available.

Cool you finally posted this. Did you know about this before I e-mailed you the tip? I've had my post up since yesterday. Anyway I'll be sure to pass on more Muppet news to you if I see it.

Media Monkey Ninja,

Yes, I catch this before your (and about 50 other people's) emails poured in. It did take me a bit longer to get the story up because I was waiting to hear back from some Muppet insiders with more details and confirmation of some of the facts floating around out there.

I do appreciate the news tips, and if you ever come across any other stories, feel free to pass them my way.

The music portion is what most interests me. I hope this is good. By the way, has the election special been axed or is that still happening?

Frogboy,

Yes, sadly the election special has been canned. Disney decided to pass on the special (which was also written by Fink, Ganz and Samson), mainly because such a production would have a limited re-air/resale value after the election passes. So they decided to bump the Christmas special up a year from the original plan of '09 to fill the gap - and they are now working on developing some other ideas to produce in '09 (leading up to the Segal/Stoller film in 2010).

Not sure if this is the same thing, but a TV show entitled "Letters to Santa" is filming in Park Slope Brooklyn today near 8th Ave and President St.

What they should do is release an album to complement the special like they did with "A Christmas Together". That way everyone can enjoy the music even after the special is over.

PS: Anyone know if this is a hour long special or another 2 hour TV movie?

So is it true that Miss Piggy's the villian in this special?

Why isn't this airing on ABC, Disney's own network, instead of on NBC?

Thanks Greg! I think a 1 hour special is the perfect time frame for these specials and they are much more likely to be rerun then a 2 hour TV movie.

forgive me if this has already been discussed, but are we going to see a DVD and CD of this wonderful production? anyone know? Disney is pretty good about marketing these kinds of specials.....
