Henson's Christmas Toy Comes to DVD

Jim Henson's 1986 television special "The Christmas Toy" will soon be available on DVD! The heart-warming tale of toys that come to life on Christmas Eve has been a beloved fan favorite for years. HIT Entertainment plans to release the special on DVD on November 4, 2008.

"The Christmas Toy" features an original cast of loveable puppets created by Jim Henson and delightful songs by Jeff Moss. The special shows viewers that love, friendship and helping others are the most important gifts of all as Rugby Tiger sets off to recapture the glory of being the #1 Christmas toy.

The award-winning special received the 1987 Golden Hugo Award for Children's Programming at the Chicago International Film Festival and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program.

It is unknown at this point if the introductory scene with Kermit the Frog (who is now owned by the Walt Disney Company) will remain intact on this release, or if the frog's scene will be edited out (similar to his scenes in the DVD release of "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas"). It is also unknown at this point what, if any, bonus features the DVD will include.

So be sure to mark your calendars and prepare to ring in the holidays with this classic Jim Henson special on DVD; and I will be sure to keep you all updated as soon as more information on this release becomes available.

Does this mean Secret Life of Toys is close behind? What a great DVD release that would make. It's one of the only Muppet-related things they have left in their library. Only 13 episodes, so it's really a no-brainer.

I am REALLY excited about this, but Kermit has to be in it! There's no point if they edit him out, it wouldn't be worth it. It's still a shame about Emmet Otter, but they did fill that DVD with extra's which were way past cool. I really hope HIT gets it together for this one.

Resist the temptation! HIT doesn't deserve our support until they announce a stand-alone release of Fraggle Rock season 4. Write them and let them know you won't buy this until they get with the program.

I'm not going to buy that Fraggle Rock Box set but there is no way I'm going to pass this up.
Thanks for the good news! :)

Right on! HIT does not deserve money or support until they finish the Fraggle series.

I HATE THE CHRISTMAS TOY.

Editing films is getting to be common for muppet releases :(

Muppet Family Christmas DVD has many scenes removed from it. If you happen to have it recorded off TV you have the full version!

Let's hope this great Christmas feature is left intact with Kermit!

It appears that the running time of this DVD is two minutes short of the previous Kermit-included VHS versions of the 90s. Is the frog cut again? First Emmet Otter and now this. I understand that Henson owns the specials and Disney owns Kermit, but this has become ridiculous.

Was a phone call even placed to Disney? It was rumored the last version of Emmet Otter was rushed to market and that Disney wasn't even contacted about Kermit's brief introduction and conclusion. Sure the specials do stand alone without these bits, but they are very special Jim Henson performed segments that are now on the cutting room floor.

I hope Kermit is included in these new releases. What good do these Kermit cuts do anybody? As long as the frog isn't used on the cover, or advertising and is credited to Disney what harm is there?

I HATE THE CHRISTMAS TOY.)

Okay, Grouchy Smurf. It seems like the only reason you post here is to put chaos on this news blog. I have one thing to say about this: OUT, OUT, OUT! And don't come back!

I just read the reviews for this on Amazon.com and someone said that kermit has been edited out! They also wrote that the Old Friends/New Friends finale has either been edited out completely or is extremely butchered. What a letdown :-(

The Christmas Toy... hum.. how do I feel about it? It's a super cute movie. It was given to my 3 year old daughter 2 weeks ago by a friend. My friend suggested we wait before she sees it. We didn't.. now I wish we had. So far I have seem this move at least 30 times. She's become obsessed and Mommy is about to lose it. ;o) So in all honesty it is a well made.. cute children's flick. Buy it and save it for Christmas vacation. By then your child will have other distractions and hopefully will be satisfied with just a few viewings.
