"Letters to Santa" DVD Details!

Just hours ago we reported that the 2008 holiday special "A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa" would be coming to DVD this fall. The collectable DVD release will hit stores on September 29, 2009. Since our initial report I've received even more details on this exciting release from the fine folks at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Aside from the complete hour-long television special, the DVD will also include over 15-minutes of original bonus material! The bonus features include an all new documentary-style featurette entitled "Searching for Santa Claus," plus a collection of never-before-seen deleted scenes from the special. The single-disc DVD release will come in an eye-catching collectable o-sleeve package and will carry the suggested retail price of $26.99.

"A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa" features the Muppet gang on a quest to get three misplaced letters to Santa Claus before Christmas Eve. The musical special features appearances by Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Griffiths, Jane Krakowski, Petra Nemcova, Uma Thurman, Tony Sirico, Steve Schirripa, Michael Bloomberg, Madison Pettis and Paul Williams. The special, directed by Kirk Thatcher, was written by Hugh Fink, Scott Ganz, Andrew Samson, and Paul Williams.

I will keep you updated with any more information on this exciting holiday release as information becomes available.

Any word on a blu ray release? It was broadcast in HD, so I know they have the source material.

Is it only a 4:3 aspect ratio transfer or will it also be enhanced for 16:9 widescreen? I remember with Its a Very Merry Muppet Christmas, they only had the 4:3. I ask cause I just bought a 16:9 1080p monitor for my PC, which I also use as my TV and entertainment center. I have a TV tuner card, Window Media Center and the whole nine yards. Just don't have a Blu-ray drive yet, just a DVD drive.

Well, even though this is good news they $27.00 price tag seems kinda steep for an hour long TV special. I mean for a few dollars more you can buy a whole season of the Muppet Show which is gonna have a run time 15 times longer!

It was a TV special, what did you expect? Most TV specials don't get big fancy DVD releases...and 15-minutes of new stuff, that means 25% of the disc's content is brand new stuff!

I'm happy. The price will probably fall with the Amazon pre-orders. SRP always starts high. The cover isn't the best art they have on hand, but it's attractive. iconic and will pop among all the other Christmas stuff. I hope they have a promo for the Halloween special too.

It MUST be widescreen, Disney. Please.

It would have beennice to have the extended cut that the writers talked bout during production. Deleted scenes are nice but incorporating them back into the production ala Wizard of Oz would have been my preferred choice.

Commentaries, also, aren't THAT expensive to record; especially with a bankroll like Disney's and a proven property like the Muppets.

The suggested retail price might seem kinda steep at $26.99, but many stores use that price to "declare" a price deduction of their own. And Disney rarely puts out a lower priced DVD, especially when just released.

For example, the classic short Prince & The Pauper has a SRP of $19.99. And this isn't even an hour long special - it's a short film, plus a handful of other "related" short films to fill out the DVD a bit. Even with the $19.99 SRP, Amazon.com has it for $13.99 with the note that "You Save $6 (30%)" by shopping Amazon.com, or Target, or Wal-Mart, etc.

It's all marketing - to make you think you got a deal. :P :D
